Albee Creek to Big Trees Area Loop Trail
Trailhead: Entrance station at Albee Creek Campground
Location: Five miles west of the Avenue of the Giants on the Mattole Road. Nine miles from Humboldt Redwoods State Park Visitor Center.
Hiking time: 2 hours
Distance: 2½ miles round trip
Difficulty: Easy, some moderate slopes 
Elevation gain/loss:
  • Starting elevation: 400 feet
  • Gain/loss: approximately 140 feet
Seasonal bridge access: Yes - summer only access to the Flatiron Tree and Giant Tree from the Big Tree Area parking lot. (approximately June-September). Year-round access from Grasshopper Fire Road.
Description:
This trail passes through the Rockefeller Forest, a 10,000-acre grove of old-growth redwoods. Rockefeller Forest was purchased in 1933. Bull Creek is a winter spawning stream for salmon and steelhead. After crossing the creek at the Big Tree Area, you will find the Giant Tree and the Flatiron Tree. The Flatiron Tree fell during winter storms in 1995. The Giant Tree was designated the Champion Coast Redwood in 1991 by the American Forestry Association. The Tall Tree of the Rockefeller Forest is located on the opposite side of the creek.
