Big Tree Area - Bull Creek Flats Loop Trail
Trailhead: Big Tree Area
Location: Big Tree parking area, four miles west of the Avenue of the Giants on the Mattole Road. Eight miles from Humboldt Redwoods State Park Visitor Center.
Hiking time: 5 hours
Distance: 9 mile round trip
Difficulty: Easy, but a long hike
Elevation gain/loss:
  • Starting elevation: 200 feet
  • Gain/loss: approximately 477 feet
Seasonal bridge access: Yes - summer only access from the Big Tree Area parking lot (approximately June-September). Year-round access from Grasshopper Fire Road. Summer-only seasonal bridge at Lower Bull Creek Flats.
Description:
Begin this trail to the right of the Giant Tree. The trail follows the south bank of Bull Creek through Rockefeller Forest to the Lower Bull Creek Flats Loop Trail. Here, it crosses the creek on a seasonal bridge and continues back west paralleling the north bank of the creek. Attempting to cross Bull Creek near Bull Creek Flats is not recommended when the creek is high and the seasonal bridge is out. This trail winds through the largest remaining contiguous old-growth coast redwood forest in the world.
