Environmental Camps
Sometimes referred to as undeveloped &/or Primitive
Environmental camps usually permit the camper to drive their vehicle into
a special parking area and from there they must carry their camping equipment a short
distance, generally 200+ yards to up to ¼ mile. First come/first served except
Humboldt Redwoods which maybe reserved.
Each site has a picnic table, fire ring, a tent location and a toilet
nearby. No potable water available at the sites.
Fee: $7.00/$11.00/ site (off/on season) Subject to change as of
January 2001
While each site may accommodate up to 8 people maximum, the sites are
primarily designed for very small user groups (1 4 people)
Because of the backcountry nature of these camps no pets permitted
Lakes Earl & Tolowa (707) 464-6101 ext. 5151)
- 6 sites (located 10 miles north of Crescent City)
- Register, pay fees and receive the combination to environmental camps locked gate at
Jedediah Smith or Del Norte Redwoods State Park campgrounds.
- Camps are located in coastal dune area a short distance from the ocean.
- From the camp area over 15 miles of scenic trail will lead the visitor to ponds,
marshes, sand dunes, wooded areas and the Pacific Ocean.
Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park Gold Bluffs Beach area

- 3 sites (located 6 miles north of Orick)
- Register, pay fees and receive the combination to environmental camps locked gate at Elk
Prairie or Gold Bluffs Beach entrance stations.
- Camps are located in a spruce/redwoods/alder forest a short distance from the ocean.
- From the camp area over 70 miles of scenic trail will lead the visitor to a lagoon, sand
dunes, wooded areas and the Pacific Ocean.
Humboldt Lagoons State Park (707) 488-2041
Stone Lagoon Boat-in sites
- 6 sites (located 10 miles north of Trinidad)
- Self register & pay fees at the boat ramp area near Visitor Center.
- Camps are accessed by boat. (small boat, canoe &/or kayak advised. 10-mph maximum
speed on lagoon). Campers must bring their own float vehicle.
- 1500-acre lagoon surrounded by forest and sand barrier beach, hiking trail and ocean
environs to explore.
Dry Lagoon
- 6 sites (located 9 miles north of Trinidad)
- Register, pay fees and receive the combination to environmental camps locked gate at
Patricks Point State Park entrance station or Humboldt Lagoons Visitor Center.
- Camps are located in a spruce/redwoods/alder forest a short distance from the ocean.
- From the camp area over 10 miles of ocean frontage, lagoons with keen bird watching and
a coastal trail are available.
Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park (707) 777-3683
- 5 sites (located 20 miles east of Fortuna)
- Register, pay fees and receive the combination to environmental camps locked gate at
Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park entrance station.
- Camps are located along the Van Duzen River near redwood/fir/alder forests.
- During the summer the warm weather combined with the river access make this an enjoyable
natural respite.
Humboldt Redwoods State Park (707) 946-2409
- 5 sites (Baxter 2 sites & Hamilton Barn 3 sites 7 miles west of Weott on the
Mattole Road).
- Register, pay fees and receive the combination to environmental camps locked gate at
Humboldt Redwoods State Park HQ &/or Burlington Campground entrance station. NOTE:
These sites are on the reservation - ReserveAmerica - system 1-(800) 444-7275 from
Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
- Camps are located along the Bull Creek near redwood/fir/alder forests.
- Ancient forest, open meadows, riparian habitat, and hiking trails are all available.
