| Description: | |
| This trail climbs through a mixed forest of redwood, tan oak,
and Douglas fir. It continues up to a peaceful, sword fern covered redwood grove. The
trail ends at the Elizabeth Achelis plaque. Maria McKeon Allen was a descendant of wealthy Philadelphia families. Her great-great-grandfather was Thomas McKeon, signer of the Declaration of Independence and first governor of Pennsylvania. Her mother was of the Wharton family, who endowed the Wharton School of Business. Maria and her husband, Benjamin Curtis Allen, were well established socially and were known for their philanthropies. Maria McKeon Allen, the National Council of Garden Clubs, and California Garden Clubs donated the funds to purchase this grove in 1949. Mrs. Allen died in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1950. |
