Hamilton Barn Campsite 5

Hamilton Barn Environmental Camp is on the north bank of Bull Creek, six miles west of Highway 101 along the Mattole Road. Campsite #5 pictured above is about 200 yards from the parking area. Cross the footbridge over Mill Creek and follow the path straight ahead. Take the path to the right past the water supply. The site is along the bank of Bull Creek in a more open location than the other two sites. There are a couple of old apple trees here. The trees provide  shade during hot summer days. The horse trail is located nearby and provides a good starting point for day hikes. Bull Creek is a short walk away. Although the creek has water all year long, the depth varies. There may be good swimming holes one year and they may be gone the next. The creek is always a good place for wading. The creek channel can vary considerably from year to year. Due to the highly erosive nature of the terrain, tons of gravel travel down the stream channels with winter high water flows. This can drastically alter the creekbed in just one rainstorm. Bull Creek may run adjacent to this campsite one year, but be much farther away the next. An old apple orchard is located along the road into the campground, remnants of the days when Bull Creek was a thriving town. The 1955 and 1964 floods caused a lot of damage to the area and the entire Bull Creek watershed was eventually acquired by the park. A rodeo grounds was located not too far west on Mattole Road.  The Pioneer Cemetery and remnants of the old dance hall can be seen on the road into Cuneo Creek Group Horse Camp, located one mile west of Hamilton Barn Environmental Camp.

Environmental camping offers a more secluded camping experience. It is quieter and wildlife is frequently seen in the area. Proper food storage will discourage wildlife from visiting your campsite in search of an easy meal. This is an especially good idea in black bear country. When not in use, food and scented items should be stored out of sight in your vehicle with the windows rolled up.

Apples and blackberries may be picked for personal consumption when they are in season. All other plants and animals are protected.

Reserve Hamilton Barn Environmental Camp campsite #5 through Reserve America.
