Hours and Seasons of Operation

Park Hours: The park is always open, however some areas are day use only and some campgrounds are open seasonally. Some day use areas are seasonally closed during winter.
Park Headquarters hours: Park headquarters is generally open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Visitor Center hours:
  • Summer hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily
  • Winter hours: 10a.m. to 4p.m. daily

The Visitor Center is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Visitation season: The primary visitation season is summer, however there are reasons to visit in any season. Winter rains (65 inches or more a year) keep visitation low. In the spring, wildflowers are an especially beautiful attraction. The colorful leaf displays make fall a nice time to visit as well.
Campgrounds:
  • Burlington: Open all year; reservations are available all year.
  • Albee Creek: Opens Friday, May 18, 2007 and closes Monday October 15, 2007. Reservations are available from May 18, 2007, through September 4, 2007.

  • Hidden Springs: Opens Thursday, May 3, 2007 and closes Wednesday, September 5, 2007. Reservations are available from May 18, 2007, through September 4, 2007.
  • Environmental Camps: Open Friday, May 18, 2007 and closes September 24, 2007. Reservations are available from May 18, 2007, through September 4, 2007.

    • Check-in at the Burlington or Albee Creek campground entrance stations during summer season. You need the gate combination to access the camp. We cannot give the combo over the phone. Register at Park Headquarters during the off-season.
  • Williams Grove Group Camp and Marin Grove Group Camp: Opens Friday, May 18, 2007 and closes Monday, September 24, 2007. Reservations are available from May 23, 2007, through September 4, 2007.
  • Cuneo Creek Group Horse Camp: Opens Friday, May 4, 2007 and closes Monday, October 15, 2007. Reservations are available from May 18, 2007, through October 14, 2007.

  • Cuneo Creek Horse Camp: Opens Friday, May 4, 2007 and closes Monday, October 15, 2007. Reservations are available from May 18, 2007, through October 14, 2007.
  • Trail Camps: Open all year, reservations are not available. Campers must register at Burlington or any other open campground prior to departing. Register at Park Headquarters during the off-season. In winter, ask about trail and weather conditions before departure. No water is available at Grasshopper Trail Camp during winter. In summer, water is available at Grasshopper Trail Camp only when the fire lookout is staffed (generally July 1 to October 1.) Plan to bring water with you.
  • Note: Campground entrance stations are staffed during the summer season only. Off-season is generally mid-October through mid-May.
Day Use areas: Most day use areas are open from dawn until dusk all year, however some of these areas are closed during winter. There is a day use parking fee to use Williams Grove. No overnight camping is allowed in day use areas.

All day use areas will be open for the season on Friday, May 18, 2007 and will close for the season on Monday, September 24, 2007. Reservations for day use areas can be made through the park at (707)946-2409.

Trails: All trails are open year-round. Some backcountry trails may be difficult to access in the winter. Seasonal bridges over the Eel River are removed in winter. Although the trails on the opposite side of the river are open, the hike in is much longer. Winter access is available at the Big Tree Area or Grasshopper Fire Road from the Mattole Road. Before departing for the more distant destinations in winter, please check weather forecasts and be aware that the rivers and creeks can rise dramatically overnight during heavy rains.
Seasonal Bridges: Seasonal bridges over the Eel River and Bull Creek are usually removed by mid-September. The bridges generally are installed by Memorial Day. These temporary bridges cannot be left in year-round due to seasonal water level changes in the Eel River and its tributaries. Attempting to cross the river during heavy winter flows is not recommended.

You can help support the work of the H.R.I.A. (Humboldt Redwoods Interpretive Association) by becoming a member. Funds raised through memberships, endowments, and donations enable H.R.I.A. to develop displays, purchase equipment, sponsor research, publish interpretive literature, and also to fund the expansion of the Humboldt Redwoods State Park Visitor Center and its quality exhibits. A critical element in the success of the Association is its membership and endowment program. Individuals and families throughout the country have long supported the Association.
