Mountain Biking

Humboldt Redwoods State Park has some excellent roads for mountain bike treks. Most of these are located in the Bull Creek area of the park. See the Interactive Trail Map page for trail maps, elevation profiles, and descriptions. Mountain bikes are restricted to the park fire roads and are not allowed on the hiking trails. Most of the fire roads were originally constructed for logging and are not as fragile as the foot trails. None of the fire roads are paved.  Many are well-graded, with a gravel surface, and travel well even in winter. The routes generally involve steep or moderate slopes. The Visitor Center has further information for mountain bikers.

Cycling on the park roads

Bicyclists who prefer paved roads may want to tour the Avenue of the Giants or the Mattole Road. Be aware that these roads are heavily traveled by vehicles in the busy summer months. In many places, particularly in the Rockefeller Forest, there is little or no road shoulder. Children should be supervised at all times when riding along these busy roads. California law requires cyclists under the age of 18 to wear a helmet at all times, even when riding in the campground. Maps are available at the Visitor Center.

You can help support the work of the H.R.I.A. (Humboldt Redwoods Interpretive Association) by becoming a member. Funds raised through memberships, endowments, and donations enable H.R.I.A. to develop displays, purchase equipment, sponsor research, publish interpretive literature, and also to fund the expansion of the Humboldt Redwoods State Park Visitor Center and its quality exhibits. A critical element in the success of the Association is its membership and endowment program. Individuals and families throughout the country have long supported the Association.
