The Sinkyone Lolangkok people were the first inhabitants of the park area. They made their home in winter along the waterways, where they fished for salmon. In summer, they moved into the hills to gather acorns from the tanoak trees. With the settlement of this area, the Sinkyone way of life ended. The people were sent off to reservations far away, or killed in battles with settlers. You can learn more about them on the park web site, or in the Visitor Center.
