Trail Camps

Trail camping offers backpackers the chance to get away from the more populated developed campgrounds. The backcountry areas of the park offer a range of different environments, from meadows to forests. To find out more about each camp, click on its name or click on the camp on the map below. Each camp description contains a trail elevation profile and more information about that campground.

A full-color topo map with trail camp locations marked on it is available for download. See link at left. To copy the map, just right click on it and choose "Save picture as..." Save the file to your computer. You can then print it whenever you want. The map is 1:24,000 scale and is 471KB, so give it time to load.

By following some basic rules for backcountry use, campers can leave the area as pristine as when they arrived.

Trail Camp Rules
 
  1. Camp in designated trail camps only.

  2. No woods fires are allowed.

  3. No dogs or other domestic animals are allowed in campsite or on trails.

  4. Cannot possess firearm, bow or slingshot

  5. Smoke only in designated campsites; smoking on trails is prohibited.

  6. Stay no longer than three nights.

  7. Dispose of waste water and wash dishes at least 100 feet from any stream, spring, or faucet.

  8. Pack out all trash and garbage.

  9. Purify piped drinking water prior to using it.

  10. Leave campsite as though no one else had ever camped there.

  11. Erect no structures made from rocks, branches, or other natural materials.
