Volunteering in the Park
Volunteers help in many aspects of running the park. They provide much-needed assistance to park staff and visitors. There are opportunities for camp hosts, visitor center hosts, and docents at various trailheads. Volunteers may be provided a free campsite in exchange for a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week. Many parks in the North Coast Redwoods District need volunteers. Find out more about these parks by reading the descriptions on the "Other Nearby State Parks" page. When you decide which park(s) you are interested in, contact them, or the North Coast Redwoods District office and request a Host/Volunteer Application. (These may soon be available on this web site for download. For now, you should call the park, or district office to obtain one.) If you are interested in applying to more than one park, you may send your application to the district office and indicate which parks you are interested in.
Camp Hosts |
| Camp hosts stay for a minimum of one month,
up to a maximum of six months. Camp hosts are the "friendly hosts" for the campers and the "eyes
and ears" for staff. They answer visitor questions, sell firewood, provide
information, perform light housekeeping, and assist with campground operations.
Camp host opportunities are available at Burlington Campground,
Albee Creek, and Cuneo Creek Horse Camp. Albee and Cuneo are generally open
from April through October. Volunteers bring their own motorhome or trailer.* |
Current camp host openings Our current camp host openings have been filled. Watch this page for updates on future positions. For more information, please contact Ranger Nicole Van Doren: For more information on volunteering in parks, visit the State Parks web site: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=911

Visitor Center Hosts |
| Visitor center hosts staff the visitor center. They answer visitor questions, give directions and literature, perform light housekeeping, assist with bookstore sales and interpretive/educational programs. Volunteers are needed year-round, although visitation to the park drops off significantly in winter. Volunteers bring their own motorhome or trailer.* Visitor center hosts generally stay for a month, sometimes longer. |
Docents |
| Docents must attend the docent training, which is usually offered annually. Check with the Visitor Center for the current schedule. Docents usually volunteer at the most popular trailheads, selling maps, giving directions and information, and answering visitor questions. |
* The camp host and visitor center host campsites have full hookups, including water, electric and sewer. Visitor center host sites are not in the public campground. This applies to Humboldt Redwoods only. For information about volunteer sites at other parks, contact them directly.

This web site provided by Humboldt Redwoods Interpretive Association You can help support the work of the H.R.I.A. (Humboldt Redwoods Interpretive Association) by becoming a member. Funds raised through memberships, endowments, and donations enable H.R.I.A. to develop displays, purchase equipment, sponsor research, publish interpretive literature, and also to fund the expansion of the Humboldt Redwoods State Park Visitor Center and its quality exhibits. A critical element in the success of the Association is its membership and endowment program. Individuals and families throughout the country have long supported the Association. |
